Henry was born and raised in South Shields. He started his education at Mortimer Primary School before progressing to St. Wilfrids RC Comprehensive School.  After gaining his GCSE’s he went on to study his A levels at St Aidans 6th form located in Sunderland.  On completion of his A Levels he was offered a place at the University of Edinburgh to study a MEng in Civil Engineering.  Henry spent 3 years living and studying in Edinburgh before deciding to leave his course and focus primarily on gaining the relevant experience and qualifications to become a fully qualified Outdoor Instructor.

Henrys interest in outdoor pursuits was sparked at a very young age spending many weekends in the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales walking with his family.  From that point the love of being on the hills or in the water grew.

It was when he first visited an outdoor activity centre located on Coniston Water that he realised that people could do this for a living, the whole concept seemed too good to be true.  Ever since, he has dreamt of doing this himself and was determined to make it so.

When he joined a local Sea Scout group Henrys visits to Outdoor Activity Centres became more of a regular occurrence.  It was here that his navigational skills and water based skills developed.  He started sailing competitively at the age of 11 and has competed several times a week at club level since then.   He has also competed in many national events.  Henry also took part in two legs of the 2005 Tall Ships race when he was 15, which proved to be one of the most mentally and physically challenging achievements thus far.  At the age of 16 Henry gained his first outdoor qualification as an RYA Dinghy Instructor.

From the age of 13 Henry regularly spent many nights out on the hills wild camping with friends and he hopes to soon complete his Summer Mountain Leader Award.

When Henry was at 6th Form he was given the opportunity to take part in an expedition to Borneo. This is where he met Lloyd Murray who was leading the expedition.  It was upon his return to the UK when Henry’s dream of working in the outdoors became a reality when he was given a seasonal position with Outdoor-ambition in the summer of 2008.  Since then Henry has spent his summers working for Outdoor-ambition and has never looked back. In his spare time Henry takes every opportunity to be outdoors.   Spending nights out on the hills or in the sea when the weather permits by any means, boat or board!  A true outdoor enthusiast he loves learning new skills and is always eager to progress!
